Career History

I graduated from Mayo Medical School and completed my training in Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.  After residency, I worked at Park Nicollet Clinic in the Minneapolis area for 12 years.  Fourteen years ago, while still at Park Nicollet Clinic, I began an outreach practice at the Owatonna Clinic-Mayo Health System.  Seven years ago I stopped working in the Twin Cities and began working in southern Minnesota full time, also establishing an ENT practice in Faribault at Cannon Valley Clinic-Mayo Health Systems.

I am now starting my own clinic, the O’Halloran Clinic, to continue to serve the ENT needs of patients in Faribault, Owatonna, and the surrounding area.  While in the midst of preparations for the opening of the O’Halloran Clinic, I was asked by Northfield Hospital & Clinics to develop an ENT practice at  FamilyHealth Medical Clinic one day per week.  In October of 2010, I began seeing there and operating at the Northfield Hospital.

“The Lakeville FamilyHealth Medical Clinic has been very busy and is growing quickly.  We are adding time soon.   My usual clinic hours in Lakeville are Monday mornings.   We are adding a Tuesday clinic beginning in February, with surgery on Fridays in Northfield.”  From the Lakeville location, Dr. O’Halloran sees patients from all over the south metro including:  Lakeville, Rosemount, Eagan, Bloomington, Savage, Shakopee, Burnsville and Minneapolis.

The O’Halloran Clinic officially opens in Faribault on January 27, 2011.  “We are intentionally starting slow to make sure that we have all the bugs ironed out, but should be full speed ahead in February.”

Where does Dr. O’Halloran perform surgery?

If patients at the O’Halloran Clinic need surgery, they can choose where they wish to go.  I operate at Northfield Hospital, District One Hospital in Faribault, and the Crossroads Surgery Center in Faribault.

Special Medical Interests

Nose and Sinus

I love all of ENT, but am passionate about caring for those patients with nose and sinus problems, “sinus headaches” and facial pain.  For sinus problems, I am an advocate of “less is more”;  I use medicine ahead of surgery, and if surgery is needed, I perform the surgery in a way that leaves as much of the normal nasal and sinus anatomy intact as is possible.

Children

I’ve always loved taking care of kids and treat them like they are my own.”

Dr. O’Halloran enjoys seeing children with all ENT problems, and, upon request, or sometimes spontaneously, will perform a magic trick to make a quarter disappear that can fool most 5 year olds.

“As part of our training at the Mayo Clinic, we were taught to stay with children in the operating room until they have completely awakened.  Given the safety of modern anesthesia, it’s usually not necessary, but I still do it.  It adds an extra margin of safety that I would want if it were my child having surgery.  I do the same for adults.”

Sleep Apnea and Snoring

Sleep apnea remains undiagnosed in most of the people who have it.  Most people who snore loudly have sleep apnea, but you can have sleep apnea and not snore at all.

“Taking care of patients with sleep related breathing problems is a large part of my practice.  I had surgery for sleep apnea and snoring and it worked for me, but part of my job is to tell you that surgery may NOT be the correct answer for you.”

Watch this space for more information on sleep apnea coming soon.

Skin Cancer of the Head and Neck

“I was one of the first Mayo ENT residents to spend the winter at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona.  It was  great to get away from that Minnesota winter,  and, more importantly, I was able to spend a lot of time working with an ENT-facial plastic surgeon learning how to remove head and neck skin cancers and close the wounds in a cosmetically pleasing way.”

Facial Plastic Surgery, Botox, Dermal Fillers, Facial Lasers for resurfacing, skin tightening, facial redness, and birthmarks.

“I spent a fair amount of time this summer working in Edina at Zel Skin and Laser.  The founder  of Zel Skin is Dr. Brian Zelickson, a nationally and internationally known laser expert as well as a medical school classmate of mine.  In addition, his clinic is quite likely the busiest clinic in the state for Botox and dermal filler injections.  After learning from the best, I am happy to offer Botox and dermal filler injections at the O’Halloran Clinic.  I am also able to offer non-surgical skin tightening and facial laser treatments in Edina.  Minimally invasive neck liposuction is also done in Edina.”
